The kids and I had a little bit of fun today! We created a project with craft foam that can be used time and time again in the future. Do you remember making paper chains as a kid? This is the same idea! But, these foam chains are reusable and the chain building exercises are endless. I can’t wait to share the secret behind these easy DIY Foam Chains with you! Our reusable foam chains are SO gorgeous and so fun! Plus, my kids can make them over and over again. The can mix up the pattern or create a whole new look.

DIY Foam Chains

The regular old paper chains use pieces of construction paper and either glue or staples. My tutorial switches it up a bit. It’s also a GREAT indoor activity for kids. Consider adding letters to the pieces to practice “building” words or practicing vowel patters. You could also add numbers to the chain loops to practice counting, skipping (like odd/evens), or any kind of math computations.

For these DIY Foam Chains you will need various colors of craft foam cut into pieces measuring 1″ x 8″. You will also need small pieces of sticky-back velcro. I bought all of these supplies at my local craft store! Simply place the sticky-back velcro onto your foam strips. The velcro comes in a variety of sizes, so if you prefer your foam strips to be larger, feel free to use larger velcro pieces!

If you want the velcro to be extremely secure to the craft foam, you can always adhere it with a dot of hot glue. If you are using glittery craft foam like you see at the end of our rainbow chains, I do suggest using a hot glue gun to attach the velcro in that case. Something about the glitter makes it necessary to go that extra mile when adhering the velcro.

It’s so fun to create projects that can be enjoyed over and over. It saves a little money and, in the end, it saves a little time. Cutting out hundreds of pieces of paper for paper chains is time consuming. I know….I’ve done it several times at school! Ha! But, these rainbow chains are so beautiful and teaching opportunities are endless….so stay tuned!
